STEWART that good players don't just roll in the door, plus there was a new coach." The new coach turned out to be a pleasant surprise for Malone and his teammates. Jack McDonald is on a year's leave and 1972 Towson graduate (and soccer letterman) Paul Bell came out of the Air Force in June just in time to be named as the interim coach.

Bell brought about 20 of the players into a campus dorm for the preseason camp, then pushed the squad through three-a-day drills for 10 days. "That experience was good for all of us, but looking back, after five games we couldn't believe it," Malone recalled. "We had come from behind to win four games in a row, including Mount St. Marys, where we were down 3-1 and won, 4 to 3." Malone, who thrives on hustle, also had a "couldn't believe it" experience his first year in college. Coming out of Dundalk High School, "where we won all the time," it was tough to struggle through a 3-10-3 season record.

"I wasn't used to it and the tendency was to give up a lot," he continued. What made this such a good year was "our winning attitude. If that had not been there, I don't think we would have won nine games. The mental part of this game is so important, and it is something the younger players just don't 1 realize During the campaign, Towson reeled off one stretch of seven games without a loss, a school record. Bell, who has instilled a winning attitude, pointed to an overtime loss to Guilford College as the only real disappointment so far.

"Pat was injured and did not play, and unconsciously I think the players had that on their minds. He is the team captain, and his leadership is just so dominant, they knew something was Malone, called Chico, after Marx brother, by his Towson team-mates, has been joined in starring roles by close friend Gerry Johnson, who has played beside him at halfback for two years, and scoring leader Bob Rush, 11 goals and two assists. Butch Maisel has 6 goals and four assists, while Barry Swain and Larry Maddox split the goalkeeper's duties, latter filling in for five games while Swain was hurt. Tomorrow, uppermost in Malone's mind, along with winning, will be enjoying the game and being able to take pride in the way he plays. "These things are important, and if I'm not going to enjoy it, I don't want to he said.

AP Ooh, that smarts Shane Wille (left) kicked the ball but Paul Rodman (center) apparently got the worst of it in Young Men's Christian Association soccer competition in Edwardsville, Ill.

Jan Buchta is moving in on the play. By JOHN Pat Malone, a senior halfback on the Towson State University soccer team, has two unfulfilled goals: beating Loyola College and playing on a championship team. The unsung hero of the school's best team in recent years will get a chance to work on both tomorrow afternoon when the two teams collide at 1.30 o'clock in the first round of the annual Mason-Dixon Conference tournament at Evergreen. The other game will have the University Baltimore playing at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, also at 1.30. Towson State, with a record of 9-5-1, has not beaten the Greyhounds during Malone's four years, including a 2-to-0 loss in last year's tournament semi-finals and a 3-to-setback earlier this fall.

That made it five straight defeats, but the 5-foot-8, 140-pounder is ever hopeful. "I've never played on a championship team, and I'd love to. And this is my last chance to beat Loyola." The home team must rule as the favorite, however, as it went undefeated in the conference and is 15-1 overall. Towson State has improved its record each of Malone's years, but this season definitely started off badly for the Dundalk resident. "At the beginning of the year, I was very negative.

I thought about the people lost from last year, and the fact Terp booters tie unbeaten Tigers, 1-1 Clemson, S.C. (AP) -Clemson University's hopes for a perfect soccer season were stopped by the University of Maryland yesterday as the Terrapins and Tigers battled to a 1-to-1 tie in an Atlantic Coast Conference contest that went into double overtime. The tie is the first blemish on the 1976 record of the nation's top-ranked Tigers following 14 victories, and halts Clemson's string of consecutive ACC wins at 23. The Tigers had posted 23 league wins following a 2-to-1 loss to North Carolina State University, November 6, 1971. Godwin Ogbueze got Clemson's tally with 23 minutes 9 seconds left in the first half, his 15th goal of the year, on an assist by Rennie Phillips.

With 4.16 to play in the regulation, 90- minute game, Maryland's Gonzalo Soto scored on a breakaway, outmaneuvered Clemson's Alfred Morrison around the goal mouth, and rifled a shot past Denis Carrington to tie the score. Merkert wins tourney on 2d play-off hole Centreville, Va.
