Sun Devil Swimming Takes on the U.S. Olympic Trials - Arizona State University Athletics (2024)

TEMPE – The road to Paris begins with the U.S. Olympic Trials taking place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, running from June 15-23 where 21 members are representing Sun Devil Swimming overninedays. The Olympics begin July 26th and run through August 11th.

Of the 22members, 14are current members of the Sun Devil Swim & Dive team, five are recent alumni of the program and three are pro swimmers who are representing Sun Devil Swimming after training at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. Last month, Ilya Kharun qualified for the Paris Olympics becoming the second Sun Devil Swimmer to represent the maroon & gold in the Olympiad and will reprsent Canada.

Here is a look at all who are attempting to qualify for the Olympics to represent Team USA and the maroon & gold. Coverage can be seen on Peaco*ck, USA Network and NBC Starting at 3:30 MST with qualifying heats airing live on Peaco*ck with same-day delayed coverage each day on USA Network. Coverage of every final will air live on NBC and Peaco*ck each night beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

Student-Athletes:

Andy Dobrzanski

Coming off his sophom*ore year being a contributor to the Sun Devil Men's team claiming the 2024 NCAA title by swimming in the 100y and 200y breast, Dobrzanski will compete in the 100m and 200m breaststroke after posting a qualifying time of 1:01.18 and 2:13.91 which are both personal bests for Dobrzanski.

Quinlan Gould:

Completed his freshman year specializing in backstroke for the maroon & gold appearing in every meet in the regular season, including two top-10 finishes at the NC Invite. Earlier this month he swam a personal best of 54.83 in the 100m back to qualify for the Olympic Trials at the THSC Summer Classic.

Dylan Gravley

Gravley qualified for the Olympic trials in the 400m IM with a qualifying time and a personal best of 4:24.87 and he will be competing in the 1500m freestyle after having a qualifying time of 15:39.23 at the TYR Pro Swim Series that took place on April 12, 2024. Gravley competed in three events at the Pac-12 Championships back in March for the Sun Devils in the 1650Y free, 500Y free, and the 400Y IM.

Jonny Kulow:

The five-time Pac-12 champion and a member of the 2023-24 USA National team, Kulow will look to qualify for the Olympics to represent the red, white, and blue in the 50m free, 100m fly, and the 100m free. He posted qualifying times of 21.87 in the 50m free, a personal best time of 52.35 at the TYR Pro Championships in the 100m fly, and a personal best of 48.38m in the Pan American games in the 100m free.

Cale Martter:

The Georgia native placed 13th in the 400y IM and the 200y breast at the NCAA Championships in March helping the Sun Devil Men to its first NCAA title. Marrter will compete in the 400m IM after qualifying with a time of 4:25.06 and recording a personal best of 2:15.85 in the 200m breast at the Phillips 66 USA National Championships in June 2023.

Jake Mason

Mason is coming off his sophom*ore year being a contributor in helping the men's team win another Pac-12 title, he's swimming in the 400m free in his only event at the trials with a personal best time of 3:55.42 at the SE TNAQ May Invitational on May 24, 2024.

Daniel Matheson:

Being named on the 2023-24 national team, and won two races this past season, Matheson is a specialist in distance swimming and competing in the 800m free, 1500m free and 400m free this weekend. The Arizona native registered personal best times in all three events at the TYR Pro Championships last July. Matheson swam a 3:48.94 in the 800 free, 7:52.34 in the 1500m free and a 3:48.94 in the 400m free to compete in Indianapolis this weekend.

Erin Milligan:

One of two female Sun Devil swimmers to participate in the Olympic trials this weekend is the All-American coming off a year where she won 20 races this past season and placed inside the top-12 at seven events at the Pac-12 championships. Milligan is competing in the 100m free and the 50m free at the trials after qualifying at the TYR Pro Series in San Antonio in April. She posted personal bests of 25.61 in the 50m free and 55.47 in the 100m free respectively.

Tommy Palmer:

The incoming transfer from down south, Palmer is coming off his freshman year at Arizona and is now a Sun Devil whereas he's competing in the 50m free after qualifying with a time of 22.77.

Leo Roden:

Coming off his first season as a Sun Devil where he competed in five meets, Roden is swimming in the 50m free after qualifying with a time of 22.53.

Patrick Sammon:

The three-time Pac-12 champion is coming off a memorable junior season after winning numerous races and being a part of the fastest 400-yard relay team in NCAA history. Sammon is racing in the 50m free, 100m free, and 200m free this upcoming week after posting qualifying times of 22.41 in the 50, 48.46 in the 100m, and 1:46.83 in the 200m.

In 2023, he won gold in the 100m freestyle at the 2023 LEN U23 European Championships along with claiming silver in the 200m freestyle.

Jackson Schuster

Schuster finished up his freshman year with the Sun Devils after competing in two events at the Pac-12 Championships in March and is now competing at the trials in the 50m freestyle after qualifying with a time of 22.22, a personal best.

Jack Wadsworth

Specializing in the backstroke, Wadsworth came off his junior year with the Sun Devils winning two events, both the 100y backstroke against GCU and Arizona and placed fourth in the event at Pac-12 Championships in March. This upcoming week he'll compete in the 100m backstroke after qualifying with a time of 55.54 last month at the Sun Devil Open on May 18th.

Sun Devil Swim Alumni

Alex Colson

The recent graduate helped lead the Sun Devils to a national title and its second Pac-12 title. Colson qualified for the trials in the 100m fly and the 200m fly with personal best times of 53.31 and 1:57.13 and placed in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships in the 200m fly.

Jack Dolan

The seven-time Pac-12 champion recently graduated from ASU and holds the school record in the 50y free with a time of 18.61. Dolan is competing in the 100m free, 100m backstroke and the 50m free this week. He qualified for the trials with times of 49.18, 54.04 and 22.12.

Julian Hill

The recent graduate is part of the 800-yard relay team that holds the school record and is a two-time Pac-12 champion in the event for the Sun Devils. Hill is competing in three events in the trials, the 100m free, 200m free and the 400m freestyle this upcoming week.

Grant House

The Sun Devil alum is competing in four events this week in Indianapolis swimming in the 200m free, 200m IM, 100m free, and the 100m IM. He qualified with times of 1:46.73 in the 200 free, 1:58.21 in the 200 IM, 49.07 in the 100 freestyle, and 53.09 in the 100 IM, respectively. House graduated from ASU with a master's degree in Sports Law and Business.

Lindsay Looney
Elite 90 Award and 2024 Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year winner Lindsay Looney will swim the 100 fly, 200 fly and 200 free. She added to her resume of academic honors with the2024 Bill Kajikawa Award and earned CSCAA First-Team Scholar All-American and graduated Summa Cum Laude with her bachelor's degree in Psychology in May 2023 and is set to graduate with a master's degree in Family and Human Development in May 2024.A co-captain on this year's team, Looney has had a storied five-year career as a Sun Devil. Most recently, she repeated as the Pac-12 champion in the 500 free after becoming a Pac-12 champion for the first time in her career a year ago. Looney also was a Pac-12 champion in 2023 in the 200 fly, an event she took fourth place in at the NCAA Championships last season. She also earned second-team All-Americahonors by taking 13th in the 500 free at NCAAs last season. At the 2022 NCAA Championships, Looney competed in the 200 fly (10th), 200 free (24th) and also competed as a part of the 800 free relay.


Cam Peel:

The Michigan native was part of the 200y free relay team that holds the school record with a time of 1:13.95 which eventually won the Pac-12 title. In March he was part of the relay team that placed third at the NCAA Championships and competed in the 100y free and 50y free. At the trials, he's competing in the 50m free after qualifying with a time of 22.52.

Pros:

Ryan Held

Ryan Held is an Olympic gold medalist at the 2016 Rio Olympics being a part of the 4x100m Freestyle relay team and has won multiple world championships and vying for his second Olympic games. Held is swimming in the 100m Free after qualifying with a time of 48.30 and in the 100m fly with a qualifying time of 53.02 at the Sun Devil Open last month. He's also trying to qualify in the 50m free and in the 200m free this upcoming week.

Simone Manuel:

The Stanford alum has been training at Arizona State in preparation to qualify for her third Olympics. Manuel is a five-time Olympic medalist and is vying to qualify for the 100m free, 200m free and the 50m free. At the 2016 Olympics, she became the first African-American woman to win gold in an individual swimming event, claiming gold in the 100 free in Rio. She qualified with times of 53.25 in the 100, 1:57.37 in the 200 fly and 24.34 in the 50 fly.

Olivia Smoliga

The thirdolympian to be training at Arizona State with Manuel as she's attempting to qualify for her third Olympic games in the 100m backstroke, 100m free and 50m free this week. Smoliga qualified with times of 58.92 in the 100 back, 53.28 in the 100 free, and 24.48 in the 50 fly.

ABOUT THE OLYMPIC TRIALS:

NBCU will present nine consecutive nights of swimming in primetime on NBC and Peaco*ck from Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the NFL's Indianapolis Colts, in what will be the first time ever that this event will be staged on a football field, in front of hundreds of thousands of fans over nine days. This year's Trials will also be the 100th anniversary since Indianapolis hosted the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials for the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris.

Coverage gets underway this Saturday, June 15, at 6:30 p.m. ET on USA Network. Qualifying heats will air live on Peaco*ck with same-day delayed coverage each day on USA Network. Coverage of every final will air live on NBC and Peaco*ck each night beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

Team USA is arguably the hardest Olympic team to make, and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Team Trials are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many of the athletes involved, representing the culmination of decades of training and preparation.
