The Institute of #CivilEngineers awarded its National Award for the Most Outstanding Civil Engineering #Achievement of 1990 to the Northern Access Route (Km 0 – Km 56) to Katse Dam in #Lesotho. This route includes the Mafika Lisiu Pass, a 3,000m high road through the Malutis, one of Southern Africa's highest #mountainranges.To facilitate heavy vehicle passage through the 15m radius bend, a 50m approach section was reduced from a 14% to a 5% gradient, with a 2.5% grade through the bend. The road width increased from 8m to 14m. A 130m long #ReinforcedEarth #retainingwall, with a maximum height of 18m and a tight 22m radius, was constructed to ensure the necessary flexibility of the facing elements. Due to unpredictable weather, the original wet #backfill was replaced with free-draining crushed doleritic basalt. Additionally, tiered Terratrel® faced Reinforced Earth structures were used to reduce the culvert length and attain the original road grade. 👷🏼Excited to share that we've been part of a project in Takoradi, Ghana, collaborating with Belgian contractor Viabuild! Our team designed true abutments using TerraClass® and, with the help of a sub-consultant, we also designed the seating beams.
