What is the meaning of "without a vision the people perish"? ›

Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained.” They can't focus, can't reach their goal, can't follow their dream. An older translation says, “Without vision, the people perish.” I've seen it with my own eyes – without vision, people lose the vitality that makes them feel alive.

That's why the Bible tells us, “The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe” (Proverbs 29:25). The Hebrew word here for “snare” refers to traps hunters used to catch animals or birds. Snares are dangerous. If we get caught, we must do whatever it takes to free ourselves.

The wisdom taught in Proverbs is godly wisdom, which has three basic characteristics: the fear of the Lord, spirituality, and skill. Fearing the Lord means having a deep reverence and respect for God and his Word, a respect and reverence that result in obedience.

The proverbs focus as much on the quirks of human nature as they do on the basic behavior of a righteous person and on man's proper relationship to God. Because the proverbs address such varied topics, a verse in Proverbs often has no connection to the verses before or after it.

Individuals with no vision have much less energy and passion for life. Why? As human beings, we need direction to feel fulfilled, Where there is no vision, people perish. Technically, visions are not goals. Goals are created from visions.

18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. 19 A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer. 20 Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

Blindness is the inability to see or a lack of vision. In the most severe cases, there's an inability to see even light. It also means that you can't correct your vision with eyeglasses, contact lenses, eye drops or other medical therapy, or surgery. Sudden vision loss is an emergency.

A traumatic experience with a male during childhood may trigger androphobia, a fear of men. This includes child abuse, sexual assaults and bullies. This phobia of men may carry over into (or begin in) adulthood. You may get anxious or fearful when you're around males in social or work settings.

So how can you overcome the fear of man? Pastor Rick Warren says that the best way to overcome the fear of man and people pleasing is to trust in God, not in man. This means leaving the results of what happens in our relationships and life to the Lord.

It can come from a number of sinful desires, but what has been most troublesome for me is what the Bible calls “the fear of man.” We fall into this when we desire the approval of others so much that we seek to please them more than God.

The apostle's meaning is, that a man, in the use of things indifferent, should not seek the gratifying of his sensual appetite or other passions, what may be pleasing or profitable to himself; but should consult the profit and edification of others.

Much of this passage refers to negative consequences of unwise attitudes or behavior: stubbornness leads to brokenness. Lack of self-control brings shame. Ignorant, ungodly rulers spread sin and corruption. Pride leads to humiliation.

It is tempting to bicker with an irrational, unfair, immoral person. One feels a natural desire to silence a fool, if for no other reason than to stop hearing their nonsense (Proverbs 27:3). That's not always a good idea (Proverbs 26:4), nor is it always possible.

This verse identifies pride as another sin (Proverbs 6:16–19) and predicts its consequences. Eventually, those who act with arrogance will be humiliated.
