Playing original games on the 360 (2024)

With this expectation set, why would the percentage of compatible original
Xbox games be so low at launch? One argument is that the Xbox 360 is not
all that further advanced.

What the hell do you mean? If a person a had a brain, and if the new Xbox
was
just a re-hash of the old one, then one would logically conclude the
compatibility
would be near 100%. Your brain has this concept complete wrong and
backwards. Anyone with a brain would conclude that if the xbox was
100% compatible, then little, or no engineering change occurred in the new
box. (yet, somehow you make the exact opposite conclusion...how can
anyone who can think make the above conclusion is beyond stupid).

Taking the ad hominum part of your argument in stride, I'm not arguing
that the Xbox 360 should have been just a resdeign of the original Xbox.
I'm arguing that consumers had an expectation of backward compatibility
based on examples from previous game consoles, and that should have made
this a built-in capability regardless of the hardware. I'm aware that the
changes in hardware make emulation in software necessary, but it looks
like to me that the Xbox 360 isn't sufficiently advanced to emulate all of
the original Xbox functions 100 percent. This is a deficit if you compare
to backward compatibility and emulation functions in previous game
consoles.

availble to us. Two-hundred games out of a library of more than a thousand
titles is not an acceptable success measurement, at least not to me.

Well, apparently, your opinion is quite small. The major top selling games
that MOST want to play work just fine on the new xbox. As for the
other manufactures easily obtaining emulation, well, none of them were
making such a quantum leap forward in terms of design and
graphics performance. In fact, given how radical and forward thinking
the new design is...it is wonder that emulation was provided.

So are you arguing that consumer expectation was wrong and that we should
just be happy with the scraps that are being tossed carelessly our way? I
feel that Microsoft is trying to set a lower expectation regarding
backward compatibility, and I'm not willing to compromise after having it
so good on other consoles.

Not for nothing, but it's not necessary to belittle my opinion to state
your disagreement. Your entitled to yours and I'm entitled to mine, and it
is a free Internet.

The fact of the matter is that new emulation updates are occurring all the
time, and the library of games that work in increasing.

If the whole original Xbox library eventually becomes compatible with an
out-of-the-box Xbox 360, that's just fine. However, a large percentage of
the library is not presently compatible. I stated that I would not get one
at launch because of this, and I'm not personally ready to replace my Xbox
or add another game console under the TV. If you're willing to give up
some compatibility, or if you're willing to wait for it, then it's fine
for you to get one. I also stated I'll probably get one later, since I
was talking about my personal reasons for not getting one right away.

But on the issue of the number of compatible games increasing? You might
be interested to see the following link about games actually being removed
from the official Xbox 360 compatibility list. Granted, Microsoft deserves
credit for being responsible and keeping the list up-to-date, but it
doesn't bode well that the list shrinks as often as it grows. Anyway,
here's the link:

The question then has to be asked, why bother with the feature at all?

Why, because it allow people to play their most popular games that they
have now. I think it is great idea. By the time no old Xbox's are available
in any stores...likely the % of compatibility for the 360 will have risen
even to your expectations.
It seems to me that providing compatibility is a great idea.

Yes it is, but not halfway. You're free to disagree, but I believe that
Microsoft misled consumers regarding backward compatibility, intentionally
or otherwise. To me, it's a binary state, either compatible or not. I
don't like the idea of personal computer standards being applied to my
game console, where I have to wait for the next update or patch. Being
able to play the games I already own may not be the best criteria for
deciding to buy new hardware, but it's one I consider strongly. If it's
not a consideration for you, that's perfectly okay.

And all that means is that I'm not buying at launch. I'm not saying that
Microsoft is evil or that the Xbox 360 is a bad console. And the fact that
I'm not getting one right away means there's one more on the shelf for
you. It's a personal decision, and I'm not claiming to speak for anybody.

My bets are you just a troll anyway..and don't actually own any xbox games,
so it is quite hard to believe that you are holding off upgrading because
some of your xbox games don't work..but you fail to mention which
ones....hum??

Again, I think your taking your disagreement and turning it into a
personal attack. I do own an Xbox, and about sixty games (I just bought
Shadow the Hedgehog, which happens to be on the compatibility list.) What
shouldn't be hard to believe is that I don't want to do any extra work to
play my games. I don't want to have to browse to a list, download a patch,
or activate any extra functions to play my games on a console. I just want
to drop the game in and go. The 360 is the first console with a backward
compatibility function where I'm not able to do that.

This is obviously a controversial issue. You're free to be satisfied with
Xbox 360 backward compatibility as it stands right now, and you're free to
be optimisitc about future growth of the capability. Also, I'm free to be
dissatisfied with the same, and to say so. The statement of my point of
view doesn't invalidate yours.

Now that we're done with that, I think the best way to settle any
disagreement is the best two out of three Outrun 2 races. No catch-up
function though, that's for people who can't powerslide. :)

the 360.
