I love camping. Well, actually maybe I love the idea of camping a little more than actually camping in a tent. Don't get me wrong, I had wonderful memories of camping as a child, sitting around a campfire, late at night, roasting hot dogs and marshmallows. Sitting around a campfire is such a great social experience, catching up with friends and eating. I think camping has vastly improved from the experiences of my childhood. There are so many readily available modern conveniences, which has vastly improved what people can eat when they go camping. I think it's called 'glamping' and it suits me fine.

Camping Meal Ideas

Some classic camping ideas just don't change, such as using a pie iron. It's fun to create and cook your own food, with so many options withwhat to put inside. For savory pie irons ideas, I like pizza, using pizza sauce, mozzarella and meat. Classic pie iron recipes usually involved buying canned pie filling, buttering the bread on the outside, and making an easy version of an apple pie, or blueberry or cherry pie. There's nothing wrong with the classic pie iron recipes (which I love) but it's great to explore new recipes. Most of these recipes don't require a lot of refrigeration, and are easy ingredients to take with you on your camping trip.

Chocolate Caramel Pie Iron Recipe

These are 2 of my new favourite pie iron recipes. To make the chocolate caramel, it's really quite self-explanatory isn't it! Find a caramel spread or use Dulce de Leche and add chocolate pieces. I like to use the Lindt chocolate balls as they are creamy, soft and just taste delicious. We tried to use Hershey Kisses cut in half, but they didn't melt as good as the Lindt. You don't need butter, but you need to use cooking spray so the bread doesn't stick to the pie iron.

Lemon Meringue Pie Iron Recipe

Lemon Meringue Pie is one of my favorite pies, so it was a no brainer to try to make a Lemon Meringue Pie Iron recipe.Lemon curd is used as the base for this pie, and we often make it at home. Otherwise just buy lemon curd or use a lemon pie filling as your spread on the bread, then add a few marshmallows and toast. The melted marshmallows are similar to the meringue from a Lemon Meringue Pie, it's just perfect by the campfire. Again, don't forget to spray the pie irons with non-stick cooking spray!

Eating fancy Pie Iron recipes while camping, I think, is a little bit fancy! We love using the fire pit in our yard where we can cook and entertain year round. Pie irons have become a bit of a novelty that's lots of fun to make with the kids, whether we are camping or just pretend camping. Bon Appetit! Приятного аппетита!

Ingredients

Lemon Meringue Pie Iron Ingredients

  • white bread sliced
  • lemon curd
  • white marshmallows
  • non-stick cooking spray

Chocolate Caramel Pie Iron Ingredients

  • caramel spread
  • Lindt milk chocolate balls
  • non-stick cooking spray

Instructions

  • Spray a generous amount of non-stick cooking spray on inside of both sides of the pie iron.

  • Choose your filling of choice (lemon or caramel) and spread on both pieces of bread and place on the pie iron.

  • Add the 2nd filling to the pie iron. For lemon meringue, I used 4 small marshmallows, and for the caramel, I cut 2 Lindt chocolate balls in half.

  • Close the pie iron, cut off the bread edges. I cut off the bread edges during the toasting, as I find it's easier to cut off crispy bread, your choice.

  • Cook over your campfire, turning often to get it nice and golden brown inside. The iron needs to heat up and this will take at least 5 minutes, but depends on how hot your fire is and how close you are holding it (hold it pretty close).

  • When the pie is golden brown, carefully remove from pie iron and allow to cool, as the insides are incredibly hot. Seriously, allow to cool so you don't burn your mouth.

  • Enjoy and repeat! The combinations are endless!

FAQs

How to use a pie iron when camping? ›

Grease the pans and get cooking.

Clasp the irons shut, then lay flat over a bed of hot embers or coals to cook evenly. You can use your gut to tell you when to flip, but don't hesitate to open them up and check every so often. Each fire is different and will cook at a different rate.

What can I use instead of a pie iron? ›

Cast iron skillets have been one of my preferred pie plate substitutes for many years. In addition to being handy and naturally nonstick, cast iron retains and evenly distributes heat—two important features for achieving a crisp, evenly baked crust.

Are pie irons worth it? ›

One of the things I like about cast iron (which most pie irons are made of) is that it holds and distributes heat evenly, which is important when cooking over a campfire with uncontrollable heat. Food seldom burns, so even the novice can turn out a perfectly cooked meal every time.

What do you grease a pie iron with? ›

When you buy a pie iron, even if it says that it is pre-seasoned, you should still season it yourself to ensure that your food won't stick. To season it, you apply a thin layer of vegetable oil to the cast iron. The cast iron part will unscrew from the handle. Then bake it in your oven at 450 degrees for about an hour.

Do you preheat a pie iron? ›

Preheat the pie iron

Separate the pudgy pie iron into two halves and set each over a campfire or open-flame stove burner to preheat for a few minutes. If over a campfire, you want them over an area of strong warm coals, not extreme direct flame. If using a burner, keep it on medium-low heat.

How to clean pie iron after use? ›

Scrub surfaces with just water until all food remnants are gone. Heat over the fire until the cast iron surfaces are bone dry and the pie iron is reheated. Remove from the heat and spray all surfaces of the cast iron with spray cooking oil. An aluminum pie iron can be washed with soap and water.

Do you have to season a pie iron? ›

As our pie irons have steel and wood rods attached to the casting*, seasoning needs to be done outside on a BBQ, Firepit or campfire. Next you'll need to season the cast iron. This will both protect it from easily rusting and also help develop a surface that over time and use will become almost a non-stick surface.

What is another name for a pie iron? ›

A pie iron—also called pudgy pie iron, sandwich toaster, snackwicher, toastie maker—is a cooking appliance that consists of two hinged concave, round or square, cast iron or aluminium plates on long handles. Its "clamshell" design resembles that of a waffle iron, but without that appliance's honeycomb pattern.

How long to leave pie iron in fire? ›

Now just hold the pie iron over a campfire for about three to four minutes and flip to cook for another three to four minutes. If you are using a cast-iron model, you can place the pie iron right on the embers and turn it after a couple of minutes.

What is a mountain pie iron? ›

Mountain pies are made in a special pie iron that squeezes the two pieces of bread together to create a delicious panini-like pie over your campfire. Like a s'more, you cook the mountain pie in the fire until the filling is hot and gooey and the bread gets crispy.

Can you put parchment paper in a pie iron? ›

You'll want to start by cutting your parchment to be just smaller than the size if your pie iron. If the parchment is outside the pie iron, it will catch fire, and you definitely don't want that. You'll need two pieces of parchment for each cookie you want to make.

How can I keep my pie crust from sticking to the pan? ›

I usually pop the pie dish in the oven for a few minutes. This helps warm up the butter in the crust (which firms up in the fridge) so that it releases from the pan. I've also seen people recommend dipping the bottom of the pie dish in warm water for 20-30 seconds to achieve the same effect.

How do you restore a pie iron? ›

Use a paper towel to rub the pie iron with oil or shortening (not butter or margarine). Be sure to cover every part of the pan, inside and out. Take a clean paper towel and wipe again until the pan seems dry – some oil will be left to season. Place the pie iron in the preheated oven or BBQ and “bake” for one hour.

How do you heat a pie while camping? ›

Ready to reheat and eat!

The perfect meal all wrapped up is easy to reheat while you are hiking, sailing, kayaking or camping. Pasties are portable food that can be reheated over a campfire, on a BBQ grill or on a camping stove. Dutch ovens work well too.

How do you use a cast iron while camping? ›

For higher temp cooking, place your cast iron directly on top of the coals. For low/medium heat, elevate your cast iron 3-6” above the coals. And for baking, position coals both underneath and directly on top of your cast iron set while it's in the dutch oven configuration.

Can you use a pie iron on a stove? ›

Models with shorter handles can also be used on the stovetop, especially if you have a gas range. However, even electric stoves work well with pie irons. Even on a rainy day you can have the experience of campfire cooking with a pie iron by your side.
