Where is the serpentine belt routing diagram? ›

A: Commonly a belt routing diagram sticker is on the underside of the hood or in the engine compartment. If there is no diagram, make a sketch of the belt and pulleys before removing the belt. This will help you re-route the new belt correctly.

Serpentine belts usually last about 50,000 miles or five years, or in some cases, even up to 100,000 miles. Your belt should be inspected at 50,000 miles, as this is often when you start to see the belt material breaking down.

Some vehicles have the serpentine belt diagram located on a decal somewhere in the engine compartment. But if your car does not have a decal, you can easily look up the diagram in a repair manual or repair database. Another option is to take a photo of the old belt before removal.

First, serpentine belts and timing belts are made out of different materials. Serpentine belts do not have to be as sturdy as timing belts. This is why serpentine belts are made out of rubber, while timing belts are made out of heavy-duty synthetic materials. Timing belts can be made of either neoprene or polyurethane.

You can replace a serpentine belt with ordinary hand tools. But we don't recommend it.

To preserve the belt's position, take a few snapshots from different angles or sketch the way it winds through the engine. If the belt is already out of place, locate the driver's manual or the under-the-hood placard, where you'll find a sketch of the routing.

Turn off the engine and remove the serpentine belt. Shake and spin each pulley to check if there is excessive play or noise. Any play or back-and-forth movement indicates a bad pulley bearing. This leads to misalignment, belt squeaks, and the pulley should be replaced.

What Does a Serpentine Belt Do? As we mentioned early, a serpentine belt delivers power to your alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor. In some cases, it also supplies power to your water pump. It's a long, winding rubber band of sorts that is attached to your crank pulley.
