Cartoonist Bob Taylor designed the first logo for the Kansas City Chiefs in 1960, a year after businessman Lamar Hunt founded the team. At the time, they were based in Dallas and called the Dallas Texans. To that end, the first logo features a gun-toting cowboy running with a red map of Texas in the background.

When the two teams met in Super Bowl LIV in 2020, it marked the first time in history that both teams wore red jerseys. As the designated home team, the Chiefs chose to stick with their red tops, which had previously propelled them to victory in the playoffs and their sole Super Bowl win in 1970.

The Chiefs, designated as the home team, have opted to stick with tradition by donning their signature red home jerseys. Meanwhile, the 49ers will wear white-a choice that carries with it a statistical anomaly.

The AFC is the designated home team this year, so it was expected that the Chiefs would wear their home jerseys. Last year the Chiefs were the road teams and wore white; when they faced the 49ers four years ago the Chiefs were the home team and wore red.
