Adam opened Upstate Shredding at the Tioga County Industrial Park in Owego, NY in 1997. In the late 1990s, the company was in danger of bankruptcy after business investments were made during a lagging metal industry.
Adam, in 2004, served eight months at Otisville Federal Prison in New York, then another two and a half months in a halfway house for kiting checks during the company’s financial struggles that started in 1998.
Later in 2005, he acquired Upstate Shredding’s sister company, Ben Weitsman & Son, Inc., after his father retired, and later in December 2009, he acquired an 11-acre scrapyard in Solvay, NY from Peter Matlow for $225,000.
By the end of the year 2009, Upstate Shredding was the biggest privately owned scrap business on the East Coast. In March 2010, Upstate Shredding received Tioga County’s Business of the Year award.
Adam acquired a number of scrap companies and additional properties, including a bankrupt scrap yard in New Castle, PA, between the years 2012 and 2016. By the end of 2016, the properties and companies were collectively known as Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling.

Later in May 2018, a U.S. District Judge found a former Weitsman Recycling employee guilty of defamation. The former employee had spread false claims about Adam online and was ordered to stop.

After launching Upstate Shredding, Adam Weitsman took a $10 million loan to buy a state-of-the-art shredder, but as stock prices dropped, acres of scrap stacked up all over the machine as it remained dormant for almost two years.
When his company came on the verge of bankruptcy, he chose to use his numerous accounts for check-kiting, for which he was arrested in 2003 and spent eight months in prison in 2004. According to him, Prison turned his life for the good as it made him more humble and enabled him to recover his company.
In the mid-2010s, he was experiencing another scandal when a former employee accused him of disposing of murder victim Michele Harris’s body in his car shredder back in 2001. He prosecuted him for defamation in 2017 and won the case, but to put the rumors to rest, he arranged for a polygraph test to prove his innocence.

Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling has been around for over twenty years, the Weitsman family has been part of the scrap metal field for 80 years. Adam’s grandfather, Ben, started Ben Weitsman & Son, Inc in 1938. Initially, the business was an automotive parts enterprise with a small scrapyard passed from father to son over the decades.
In 1985, he became vice president of a scrap processing company owned by his family, Ben Weitsman & Son.
